Human Resources & Safety Manager
Location

Dartmouth or Hantsport, Nova Scotia.

Job Description

As the Human Resources & Safety Manager, you will lead all Human Resources functions within the facilities in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland as well as providing leadership for the safety function for the organization. You will act as a trusted advisor to supervisors and managers across the organization, ensuring the proper interpretation and administration of corporate policies and processes.

Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the President, Scotia Recycling, you will be responsible for the following:

Primary Accountabilities

  • Assist in talent acquisition and recruitment processes
  • Conduct employee onboarding and help organize training & development initiatives
  • Developing a strong and innovative retention program, while also coordinating employee events and existing rewards programs.
  • Provide support to employees in various HR-related topics such as leaves and compensation and resolve any issues that may arise
  • Administer compensation and benefit plans
  • Strategic direction of the corporate safety policies and oversee the safety specialist in the administration of our safety programs
  • Take part in creating and promoting HR programs, in collaboration with SIL, to create an efficient, enticing and conflict-free workplace
  • Assist in development and implementation of human resource policies
  • Undertake tasks around performance management
  • Gather and analyze data with useful HR metrics, like time to hire and employee turnover rates
  • Organize quarterly and annual employee performance reviews in alignment with the family-wide SIL program
  • Maintain employee files and records in mostly electronic form
  • Enhance job satisfaction by resolving issues promptly, applying new perks and benefits and organizing team building activities
  • Ensure compliance with labor regulations
  • Overseeing the recruitment process for hourly and salaried employees, which includes preparing job postings, screening applicants, and coordinating with outside agencies on temporary staffing requirements.
  • Guiding the organization through the constant pursuit of effective diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Act as a business partner with the General Managers of Operations for both the Maritimes and Newfoundland & Labrador in the maintenance of the company safety program, providing support on an as-needed basis,
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education with a focus in human resources.
  • Minimum five years of progressive experience in human resources.
  • Self-starter who demonstrates initiative, strives to meet deadlines, accepts responsibility, and works with a minimum of supervision. Ability to work well in a team environment where multi-tasking is a necessity. A high degree of confidentiality, discretion, and diplomacy is essential.
  • Experience with recruitment practices and processes
  • Ability to operate with a strong sense of urgency when required, including flexibility to work outside of standard business hours when needed
  • Understanding of general human resources policies and procedures
  • Good knowledge of employment/labor laws
  • Outstanding knowledge of MS Office; HRIS systems (e.g., Payworks)
  • Excellent communication and people skills
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to coach and guide managers with employee relations, how to reduce and manage conflict.
  • Aptitude in problem-solving
  • Possess a valid Nova Scotia Driver's license with access to a reliable vehicle for work purposes
