our history
We have been the pioneers of Recycling in Atlantic Canada since 1976, with local roots dating back to 1927.
Scotia Recycling Ltd is incorporated in NS. The company’s focus was on sourcing fibre-based products such as old-corrugated cartons (OCC), old newsprint, mixed paper, etc. to feed its sister company mills at Minas Basin Pulp and Power and CKF, both located in Hantsport, NS.
Scotia Recycling moves to a larger location in the Burnside Industrial Park on Borden Ave.
Scotia Recycling acquires Sonoco’s Nova Scotia commercial recycling business. This includes a building in Dartmouth plus the collection contracts of commercial fibre from generators (large retailers & industrial generators) across Atlantic Canada using a fleet of transport trucks and dry vans.
A 30,000 square foot baling facility was constructed in Dartmouth’s Burnside Industrial Park, consolidating the two previous locations under one roof. This facility is also our central cross docking facility where low volume items are collected and then shipped to market. In 2007, an additional 9,000 square foot storage facility was constructed on this site.
Scotia Recycling expands into New Glasgow, NS, providing commercial recycling and collection services to that geography.
Scotia Recycling acquires Nova Recycling, based in Newfoundland and Labrador. The operations include a recycling facility in St. John’s and one in Corner Brook along with 6 beverage container processing facilities through the MMSB’s Green Depot.
Scotia Recycling expands its product offering to include the purchase and supply of recycled plastics to local manufacturers. SRL also expands its markets to include the export world (South East Asia primarily).
Scotia Recycling expands into Truro, NS, providing commercial recycling and collection services to that geography.
New 30,000 square foot recycling centre was constructed in Corner Brook, NL. This facility is a fibre baling facility, a beverage container processing facility and a drive through Green Depot.
Launch of Scotia Security Shredding, our expansion into the confidential shredding business in Nova Scotia.
Scotia Recycling expands into Sydney, NS, providing commercial recycling and collection services to that geography
Scotia Recycling was awarded the curbside blue bag processing contract for western Nova Scotia under the Waste Check agreement. This material recovery facility (MRF) was located in Yarmouth, NS. Our commercial fibre business is also conducted at this same facility.
Scotia Recycling establishes its New Brunswick business and opens its first location in Moncton.
Scotia Recycling was awarded the curbside blue bag processing contract with Pictou County Solid Waste. A material recovery facility (MRF) is setup in Stellarton, NS. Our commercial fibre business is also conducted at this same facility.
First deliveries of recycled fibre made to CKF’s Langley plant in BC by Scotia Recycling, expanding our support for our sister company.
Scotia Recycling was awarded the curbside blue bag processing contract with Valley Waste Resource Management. A new material recovery facility (MRF) is constructed on Valley’s landfill site. After this award, The District of Chester has also commenced delivering blue bag material to this location. Our commercial fibre business in Berwick was also consolidated at this same facility.
Entered into a marketing agreement with Fundy Solid Waste (Saint John, NB) to support their new MRF operations.
Relocation of our Moncton Business into the Westmorland landfill site. Â
Awarded the contract to manage the curbside recycling for the City of St. John’s, NL. We now operate the MRF located at Robin Hood Bay Waste Management facility.
Addition of Lunenburg County to our blue bag processing operations in Kentville.
Consolidation of Yarmouth MRF operations into Kentville MRF.
Scotia Recycling acquires Great Northern Recycling, a Halifax-based commercial recycler of fibre-based products. The operations are integrated that year into the Dartmouth facility.
Scotia Recycling acquires Island Shredding Services, a Cape Breton-based confidential shredding business and integrates those operations with its owned Scotia Security Shredding
The most modern material recovery facility in Atlantic Canada is opened in Kentville, NS.
Scotia Recycling secures the marketing contract for recyclables generated in St. Pierre and Miquelon (French colony). The materials are consolidated and handled through our Dartmouth hub.

Our employees' thoughts...
Scotia Recycling is a great company to work for. I have been here 22 years and have seen a lot of changes but safety has always been the #1 priority. The company cares about its people and that is means a lot.
At first it was just a job but as the years went by I realized there was a lot to do in regards to recycling, but we are getting there! I met a lot of great people and some becoming good friends.
When I started at Scotia Recycling, I was hired for a payroll position, but I have done so much more. Thanks to my managers' and colleagues' support I've been able to take on a new broader position, challenging projects, develop new skills, and take my career to the next level.
